The Scarlet Letter summary
The Scarlet Letter, By Nathaniel Hawthorne begins in seventeenth-century Boston at a jailhouse where Hester Prynne is led from the prison, with her infant baby Pearl in her arms. Hester has a "A" printed on her chest which is standing for her crime of adultery. Hester's husband sent her to but he never arrived in Boston. Hester then begins making a living by being a seamstress and living in a small cottage. Hester's husband comes to Boston, but does not show himself as Hester's husband. Hester begins to have problems with the people as they are wishing to take Pearl away from Hester, however Dimmesdale (a local minister) decided to let her keep Pearl for she is a symbol of her sin. Eventually Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl are set to run away to Europe. The day before the ship is to sale Dimmesdale brings Hester and Pearl in front of the people and reveals a scarlet letter sewed into his chest. Dimmesdale dies. Pearl eventually falls in love with a man over seas while Hester returns home to Boston. Eventually Hester dies and is buried next to Dimmesdale with a letter "A" engraved on their tombstone.
